albrecht durer,  a young hare, 1502

“geometry used to be called the science of space.  for various reasons this definition was discarded, so geometry no longer has an obvious subject matter.   the question arises, how then is it a science?  what is it a science of?  some mathematicians have even proposed that geometry together with the rest of mathematics, should be reclassified either as a humanity or as an art, since it is said to be guided by an aesthetic sense.  ‘a mathematician, like a painter or a poet is a maker of patterns,’ wrote g.h. hardy, typically.”
