carla juacaba, casa em rio bonito (2009)
one highlight of the past four months was hearing wilfried wang, at the latitudes symposium, refer to carla juacaba’s casa em rio bonito as a piece of steak served up raw. granted it was nearing the dinner hour. earlier, carla opened her lecture by describing her admiration of peter brook and his ability to create space with very few simple materials. two sticks at right angles conjures a more appealing metaphor than a raw flank of steak.
carla spoke very little during the lecture, opting instead to offer a couple of words about the site, the materials, and her participation in the construction process. for example when describing the site she stated, “the noise of the river, it couldn’t be quiet.” she then proceeded to show a stream of images in silence. a refreshing change in lecture style.
enjoy the quiet.
