“the making of spaces is the making of light at the same time”

jan dibbets, the shortest day at my house in amsterdam (1970)

spencer finch, 56 minutes (after kawabata) summer (2004)

these two beautiful works remind me of an earlier post, le volume bleu et jaune, about three men studying windows in a room over several years.  light is just might be the most difficult element to design for in architecture, but it seems to provide the strongest poetry.

“the making of spaces is the making of light at the same time.  when the light is destroyed, the rhythm is destroyed, and the music is destroyed, and music is terribly important to architecture”

– louis kahn from his talk at the conclusion of the otterlo congres (1959)
