“although concepción was a significant military settlement for the captaincy-general of chile, it was overrun and destroyed by mapuche armies in 1554, and once again after being refounded in 1555. concepción was restored during the governorship of garcía hurtado de mendoza when he landed there and built a fort on the alto de pinto in 1557. the town was refounded once more on January 6, 1558, by captain jerónimo de villegas.”

pezo von ellrichshausen, cien house (2009-11)

the first three minutes of pezo and sofia von ellichshausen’s lecture bordered on the line of a performance art piece.  a man in a hard hat and glasses stood on a platform jack-hammering the side of the building stripping away the top half inch layer of concrete freshly poured 28 days earlier.  eventually the entire surface of cien house would be stripped of its outer skin, revealing the course aggregate below.  for pezo and sofia, buildings are a process.  and the goal of design is to construct the perfect machine.
