bak arquitectos, ba house, 2011
another highlight of the latitudes symposium was listening to maria besonias, of bak arquitectos, lecture through an interpreter. it was an awkward exchange at first but they eventually found their rhythm. besonias opened with a series of declarations: the importance of viewing conditions as potential, limitations as possibility, restrictions as opportunity, and constrictions as inspiration. she went on to present her own house (pictured above) before quickly running through two other projects, the eeuu building and franz house (both not pictured). besonias along with guillermo de almeida and luciano kruk worked on the design of the house, which balanced an open relationship to the landscape with a strong desire for protection and security. after looking through their work and hearing besonias speak, its clear how bak arquitectos are exploring ideas of balance not only at a conceptual level, but also in terms of design; their houses are loose and free, yet tightly composed. i highly recommend paging through bak arquitectos’ website.
