“according to the reports by ‘your houston news’, johnston marklee’s single-story, metal-roofed proposal was distinguished by its respect for the landscape and the residential scale of the menil’s campus. formed around a trio of courtyards, visitors entering mdi will experience a gentle transition from the bright texas sunlight to the enclosed, softly illuminated gallery space.”

photography:  nic allinder, de menil neighborhood (2010)

while on the subject of renzo piano and modular designs built using clear frame + fill tectonic language, the menil collection recently announced that los angeles based johnston marklee will build the future menil drawing institute building.  the menil collection complex is a quirky space.  above is a photograph i took while visiting the menil for a architectural criticism piece.  the entire menil complex is such an anomaly.

dominique de menil purchased several city blocks on which to build the menil collection.  the neighborhood was intentionally kept residential.  the major stipulation for living in the area is that residents must paint their house a very specific shade of grey.  so, as you enter the neighborhood, you enter into this odd stepford wives meets houston neighborhood in which all the houses are painted the same.  the main building in the complex, designed by renzo piano, was meant to be a welcoming building nestled into this quiet homogenized community.  the structure itself is an odd juxtaposition of high-tech light weight steel frame construction and a quotidian wood siding infill.  the design seems to be the result of a neighborhood houses mating with an industrial warehouse, yet in done in a very subtly way.  most of the musuem buildings on the site have a subdued presence on the site, the heavy brick mass of the rothko chapel oddly resembles some sort of old water pressure facility.

it will be interesting to see the johnston marklee design.  i find some of their work, such as view house, to be quiet gestural which does not seem in keeping with the tone currently set at the menil.  though other designs by johnston marklee, such as the graduate art studio’s project could be more fitting for the neighborhood.

i’ll try and post more about the project later when final designs are revealed.  based on previous menil collection buildings, this should be good.

[title]     today’s title comes from the archdaily post announcing johnston marklee’s selection over the likes of sanaa, david chipperfield and tatiana bilbao.

[more piano]     though there are no images of piano’s work in this post, i was reminded to post this following this mornings ayh post on renzo’s great rue de meaux housing project.
